1/ Meghalaya’s push towards statehood came separately but simultaneously from all three of its regions—the Garo Hills, the Khasi Hills and the Jaintia Hills, all of which existed as 'excluded areas' in #BritishIndia.

2/ The #BordoloiCommittee instituted to look into the matter of Assam, also included a Khasi leader, Reverend Nicholas Roy. The committee's recommendations paved the way for the implementation of Sixth schedule in Meghalaya.

3/ When India adopted its Constitution on 26 January 1950, Khasi Hill States and the Jaintia Hill District were constituted into the common #autonomousdistrict of United Khasi-Jaintia Hills while Garo Hills was constituted as a separate autonomous district in Assam.

4/ When the #SRC was instituted in 1953, delegates from autonomous districts of present-day Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Meghalaya met at #AssamHillsTribalLeadersConference and demanded for a separate state for autonomous districts of Assam but their efforts were unsuccessful.

5/ After a period of political unrest, the Assam Congress's demand for #Assamese as the official state language sparked renewed efforts for autonomy in #Meghalaya. The All-Party Hill Leaders' Conference (APHLC) emerged as a platform for leaders to voice their concerns.

6/ In November 1960, PM Nehru offered a ‘Scottish pattern’ of government to the #autonomousdistricts, which would allow them to have a separate budget, a separate cabinet minister and deputy ministers in the Assam government, and decision making powers on legislative matters in

7/ The APHLC initially rejected Nehru’s #ScottishPlan but later agreed to it and contested the 1962 general elections. APHLC's numerical win in districts of present-day Meghalaya reignited demand for statehood. Soon after, India went to war with China.

8/ Post war, the #PataskarCommission was appointed to study the autonomous demands of the hill states but the commission recommended no changes to the #SixthSchedule, resulting in APHLC's rejection of the committee report and boycott of 1967 elections.

9/ After Nehru's death, India was in politically turbulent state. When #IndiraGandhi became PM in 1966, she met with Assam CM #Chaliha and APHLC leaders and promised to reorganize #Assam as a federated state ‘comprising units of equal status not subordinate to one another’; this

10/ In the 1967 elections, #APHLC won all seats in Garo and United Khasi-Jaintia hills, but the Assam Congress refused to back out. In response, all the elected APHLC members resigned their assembly seats and started a non-violent #satyagraha demanding statehood.

11/ On 29 December 1969, Parliament passed the Assam Reorganisation (Meghalaya) Act. The autonomous state of #Meghalaya would exist within Assam and comprise the districts of Garo Hills and United Khasi–Jaintia Hills.
