Tough issues here.
- We could really use China's cheap EVs here.
- But would that be good or bad for popular/political support of decarbonization policy?

IDK

Commissioner Mark C. Christie's objections in this meeting are misplaced. He is correct that current cost allocation methods are nonsense. But that isn't a reason to avoid good planning--that's a reason to improve the cost allocation methods!

Thanks for engaging! In fact, Figure 6 says the opposite: there is no evidence of adaptation for world GDP. If anything, damages worsen over time: the average post-1985 response is larger (-7.5%) than the baseline, post-1960 one (-6.3%).

a big shortcoming of coverage of the American presidency is treating it in isolation as if developments are unique to the US.

populist discontent,
unpopular leaders, inflation - all global phenomena of which the US is just one example. and in some cases, as with the economy,โ€ฆ

Good morning with good news: Wind & solar generated 45% of Texas's electricity in April 2024. Wow!

Nuclear produced 8%, making zero-CO2 power 53%!

Wind & solar generated more than gas. Solar produced ~12% and more than coal. Wonderful!

Climate-GDP regressions (usually with 2WFE) always made me uneasy, for a few reasons. Looking at global rather than local shocks addresses many of these reasons.

Big climate impacts if this is right. Even though GDP excludes many impacts.

If my calculations are correct, the largest direct air capture (DAC) will reduce emissions by about as much as a 3 - 7 MW of solar.

That's not much. But maybe the tech will move the needle by 2050 when there's no coal and little natural gas to displace.

Florida's ban on lab-grown meat isn't just politics; it could kill the innovation we need to reduce emissions from agriculture.

Also, not noted here, but our meat comes from corn and soybeans. EVs and lab-grown meat could kill the demand for these crops.

Reconductoring to enhance transmission makes a lot of sense.

It is strange and unfortunate that we haven't done more of this already. What' impressive here is how well Callaway et al address the institutional challenges of getting this done.

Jay Rosen Ben Smith Wow. As someone who does this for a living I can say this very strange thought process and defense are both foreign to me and very disturbing.

Look what finally got published!

TL;DR: Under some OK assumptions, the indirect fiscal benefits of low-skilled immigration might outweigh the direct fiscal downsides, because low-skilled immigrants make natives more productive.
