Wow, thank you to The Economist (Daniella Raz) for featuring Andrew Shaver and my research American Political Science Review on how hosting refugees does not spread conflict. We hope this reaches people who are now making important policy decisions wrt. Afghan refugees. cambridge.org/core/journals/…

So everyone has been paying attention to Russia and Ukraine recently. But, in my opinion, there is a bigger strategic play going on by Russia. More significant. More long term. A thread.

I don't get this: slate.com/news-and-polit… We haven't learned over the last 20 years that insurgencies are really hard to beat? It took them 10 yrs to do it in Chechnya (only 1.4 million people). I know the terrain is different but c'mon! I hope Putin doesn't read Slate.

Excited to share my new paper in American Political Science Review. I show that giving local politicians greater oversight capacity over the bureaucracy improves service delivery – in local gov’ts not aligned with a dominant ruling party cambridge.org/core/journals/… Ungated: piaraffler.com/raffler_politi… 🧵

Remember the old Collier-Rohner (2008) argument on elections and political violence? Elections reduced political violence at GDG/cap > about $2700 and increased it below that. I don't suppose that result has held. What is the latest? Thanks!

urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https… I hate this. Almost no voters "swung to the right" as near as we can tell. Some 12 million Democrats abstained. This has been a common phenomenon against incumbents in western democracies of late, see Italy and UK. (1)

I read this as a classic example of “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing.” (2)
