In conclusion, respect the cyan (Kieper) ring. Recon is now finding support to upgrade recently-classified #Oscar to a hurricane. Crazy model failure in the year 2024. We still have a lot of work to do and things to learn.

Just THREE HOURS (!!!!!) after being classified as a tropical cyclone, #Oscar is now a hurricane. I truly didn’t think this was possible in the year 2024. Unfortunately, Oscar is approaching the Turks and Caicos and isn’t well out to sea.

📣 I’m excited to announce I will be starting as an Assistant Professor in Aug 2025 at the University of Miami joint b/w the Institute for Data Science & Computing and the Rosenstiel School Dept of Atmospheric Sciences UM IDSC University of Miami Rosenstiel School! 🙌 Grad opportunities:

This is not consistent with the teachings of Jesus. To name a few pieces of scripture: Luke 3, 6, 10, and 12. Matthew 5, 22, and 25. Mark 12. John 13 and 15. Jesus preached a message of love. A message of loving your neighbor and even your enemies.

What’s happening to NOAA and many other parts of the federal workforce is just blatantly unacceptable. Andy is an amazing scientist and human being. Firing people who are making the world a safer and better place is the opposite of “efficiency.” This is outrageous.

Probationary employees across NOAA and the National Weather Service are being terminated today, including those in mission-essential roles. My own wife is among them, essential to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center's 24/7 critical mission of seismic monitoring and tsunami prediction to protect the

Thank you to UAH for the opportunity and hospitality during my visit. I had a great time talking about hurricanes and machine learning with the folks there. And a special thanks to Xiaomin Chen for the invitation and a great time in Huntsville!

Need to sound the alarm on this one. As I understand it, this is from the "President's Budget Request", which often isn't really used that heavily by Congress (who actually controls funding). But this would essentially end all research and development within NOAA and NASA if

The official NOAA "budget request" to Congress (which is a detailed version of the "President's Budget" would be devastating, and basically end all research and development. Purportedly, the proposal moves a lot of weather research and development under NWS, but doing so while

It's hard to adequately summarize how destructive NOAA's 2026 proposed budget released on Monday is for hurricane forecasting, but I crammed all I could into today's newsletter. I encourage everyone with interests along the coast to read it carefully. michaelrlowry.substack.com/p/noaa-propose…
