Going through some course material and found this old value study. Reminds that you can sketch very roughly and include everything you wanted. #photoshop #stilllife #value #paintingstudy

Always liked those SF steep roads. Played with asymmetrical balance, placing tree clusters on opposite sides to frame the street while creating visual weight that guides the eye up the road. Youtube video about the painting process: youtu.be/QrLY4KaMs_o?si…

Fun fact: moonlight isn't actually blue. It's slightly reddish. But it's super dim. In dark conditions, our color receptors barely function, so we mainly use receptors that only detect lightness/darkness. That's why night scenes are perfect for personal interpretation.

While working on the course I've been thinking about color contrast and composition. Composition is built out of contrasts. Value contrasts are the foundation, and then color contrast on top of that. A single saturated color will pop against surroundings of a different tone.

Night scenes are tricky to paint. They are full of contrasts, and there are no fixed expectations of how they should look. That's why I love to take photos and I put them on a side just in case.

Over time I figured out this thing where I break it down into steps. Quick sketch, block in the main shapes, figure out where the light’s coming from, paint the values in diminating color, then slowly add other colors. Details come last. YT video: youtu.be/dkUHSeB9VdY?si…
