From Michael Zimmer: "I think an outright ban, I don’t see that as the right solution to this problem...I think this is a larger question about privacy and algorithms and internet culture that is more than TikTok." cbs58.com/news/tiktok-ta…

SOUPS (Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security) posted the program for this year's conference: usenix.org/conference/sou… I'm happy to have a paper led by my student Sunyup Park (Sunyup Park) being presented there. Coauthors include Anna Lenhart and Michael Zimmer. Quick 🧵 on it:

In the early days of the pandemic, Michael Zimmer & I noticed a sharp uptick in media stories on new types of workplace surveillance to monitor employees remotely. As privacy scholars, we were concerned about wider implications of these practices. Let me share what we found. 🧵

🚨 New article alert! 🧵 I'm excited to *finally* share a paper that was initially written in 2019 & was just published Human-Machine Communication. "Boundary Regulation Processes and Privacy Concerns With (Non-)Use of Voice-Based Assistants": stars.library.ucf.edu/hmc/vol6/iss1/… Dr. Priya Kumar, [email protected] Michael Zimmer

In the current volume, Dr. Jessica Vitak, Privacy Zealot, Dr. Priya Kumar, [email protected], Yuting Liao, and Michael Zimmer extend Communication Privacy Management Theory (CPM) to #hmc. This article is important for examining privacy issues with #VBAs. #HAI #HCI stars.library.ucf.edu/hmc/vol6/iss1/…

Do VBA users even care about privacy? Terrific research by Dr. Jessica Vitak, Privacy Zealot, Dr. Priya Kumar, [email protected], Liao, & Michael Zimmer, who apply a tensional lens (CPM theory) showing complex negotiations and agentic work of users & non-users. Here we taste the early fruits of a dialectical approach to #hmc.

I still think often about this question I posed at the 2017 AI Now Institute gathering. Feels like many are only now realizing the privacy impacts of AI wrt ChatGPT's training data, etc.

New blog post: 'Reflecting on the future of workplace surveillance', in which Dr. Jessica Vitak, Privacy Zealot and Michael Zimmer discuss their article which can be found here: medium.com/surveillance-a… #surveillance #EmployeeMonitoring #privacy #covid19

Hey #AoIRunners attending #AoIR2023. The Gritty 5K is Saturday Oct 21 at 8:30am. Start is about 30 minutes away from conference via orange line. Who else wants to run that morning? AoIR ➡️ 🐘 @[email protected] @[email protected] Dr. J. Stromer-Galley runsignup.com/Race/PA/Philad…

I can't believe I'm actually posting on this hellsite for this, but it is striking how AI, Ethics, and Society Conference (AIES) Association for Computing Machinery AAAI never seems to really think a conference on "AI, Ethics, and Society" should be planned out more than a few months....
