The #TyneBridge from atop Robert Stephenson’s High Level Bridge (in a train crossing the Tyne from Gateshead into Newcastle Central Station). To its left is the Georgian tower and spire of All Saints’ Church. Maybe someone can interpret the cryptic messages on the panels?

This is a splendid episode. #KatherineRundell is fascinating on children’s literature, C.S. Lewis and John Donne (her biography of him, Super Infinite, is magnificent). bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

The #BayeuxTapestry “was probably commissioned by William [of Normandy’s] half-brother Bishop Odo of Bayeux in the 1070s to decorate the city’s cathedral and was almost certainly sewn by English women”. So it’s “coming home” (for a while). theguardian.com/world/2025/jul…

.Tom McKinney I love the dawn chorus on BBC Radio 3 at 6.30…in theory. My radio has been playing since about 6am, but the problem is, in bed & without my hearing-aids in, the high frequencies of birdsong just don’t register. Still, two minutes of silence is also a gift!

“Who has told every lightning bolt where it should go…. You are amazing God.” Even when strikes human beings & kills them? This isn’t the Creator I worship. [Chris Tomlin, “Indescribable”, just heard on the Daily Service on BBC Radio 4 extra.] Why does anyone sing such lyrics?

Comet #3IATLAS, a rare visitor from interstellar space. It’s known not to originate in the outer reaches of the Solar System because of its open (ie non-revolving), hyperbolic trajectory towards the Sun. science.nasa.gov/solar-system/c…

“It adds up to the steady erosion of US democracy & democratic norms. Even if it is happening quietly, without sound & fury, it is still happening. The work of opposing it begins with noticing it.” Important article by the ever watchful ⁦Jonathan Freedland⁩. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

‘Not just Harold but the Anglo-Saxon age has to die, all because of a broken oath and a failed bromance. “Men, eh,” you can hear the women whisper as they create our history’s most beguiling, devastating document.’ Warfare: a female perspective? theguardian.com/culture/2025/j…

Disappointing. I simply don’t believe this, nor the simplistic theological syllogism on which it’s based. God has authority over all things: birth, death, pain & suffering, but that is no argument against planned conception or anaesthetics. #assisteddying theguardian.com/society/2025/j…

The summer of 1976 was exceptional then but wouldn’t be now. A winter like 1962/3 is improbable this century, unless owing to #climatechange the Gulf Stream starts to fail in the N Atlantic, possible according to some climate modellers. Remember both well. theguardian.com/environment/20…
