Two decades ago, researchers started an experiment that would challenge the prevailing scientific understanding of plant communities. While modern agriculture treats diversity as inefficient, the Jena Experiment proved the opposite: complexity is the key to resilience.

We are excited to share our latest preprint from the Hogenhout lab (Saskia Hogenhout, John Innes Centre) on plant-aphid interactions, showing that the aphid effector Mp10 balances suppression of DAMP responses and activation of ETI via EDS1.

Very happy to have contributed to this together with Anita Bollmann-Giolai & Sílvia Busoms! Wild Brassicaceae with differing in salinity tolerance (same plant species), harbor distinct microbiomes with strains that can promote growth under salt stress. Preprint: doi.org/10.22541/au.17…

Microbial communities can harbor many species that do not coexist in pairs, yet can coexist in the full community. Here we provide the mathematical foundations of emergent coexistence, and explain why it can't be predicted from pairwise tests biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Very happy to share our newest preprint! We show that plant genotype drives microbiome recruitment under extreme abiotic stress (serpentines vs. non-serpentines) and identify key microbial taxa that explain how microbiomes can enable stress adaptation. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
