A bit later this year, but calf number 1 arrived today. A little heifer calf out of a Belgium blue/shorthorn mother, and belted Galloway/Hereford sire. That’s a lot of colour/pattern to end up all black!! Lol

To over simplify, white over black over red is the usual dominance ordering of colours in cattle. At this rate I may end up with all white!!

The struggle to stand is real!! But the process and time allows bonding both by scent and sound as mom constantly vocalizes during the clean up.

So not quite to the halfway point, but of the first 11 (26 expected) I have 9 heifer calves and 2 bull calves. In the last three years I now have 46 females, out of 61 calves. That’s over 75% female. I keep expecting that ratio to come down but it’s getting higher not lower!!

Back to the basics of bulls….big shoulder, big balls, and a small butt. This is a white park bull, aka ancient white park in the US. He looks to be about 1500 lbs, as a guess, so a bit small for breed standards….but big enough for me!!

Drs Rakovitch and Whelan and the investigators of the ELISA trial are trying to evaluate a personalized strategy for post op radiation for those women with DCIS of the breast. Hoping to avoid radiation in those women unlikely to have benefit. The trial is opening across Canada.

The truth...

First family stroll, and why not enjoy this March weather in February. Introducing Dad to the kids. It’s also important for the piglets to eat a bit of dirt. Probably the smallest runt I’ve ever had in a litter….that survived.

The best sound for a first time momma is the sound of her calf nursing!!

Some days I think I could do this….sleep while standing!!

Any herpetologists out there? I’m in southern Ontario. It’s about meter aka metre or yard in length. I think it’s a foxsnake.
