Everyone longs for fulfillment, and there’s nothing quite like being part of something that truly matters. When Fernanda Paez Sanchis from Spain joined the #GlobalMercy as Hotel Services Manager, her joy was simple: “I get to give a little of everything God has given me.”

13 years into her career as a pediatric surgeon, Dr. Justina Seyi-Olajide joined the volunteer crew of the #GlobalMercy, making history as the first female African pediatric surgeon to volunteer with Mercy Ships.

As Matthew Murray, MD on the #GlobalMercy, and his wife Marci recently began their volunteer journey, he reflected, “There’s a huge number of people who feel an emptiness today and want to satisfy that emptiness. Mercy Ships is a place where you can do it.

To get to school, Mohamed had to walk up and down at least two hills. Given the condition of his legs, this wasn’t just a herculean task; it was also very painful. As a result, Mohamed often missed school.

Mohamed was 8 years old when his legs began bending inward without injury or any known cause. “I was feeling pain…Even when I’m sleeping, I would often wake up crying because of the pain,” Mohamed shared.

After receiving surgery on board the #GlobalMercy, Mohamed has returned to school full-time and dreams of becoming a bank manager one day. For him, it wasn’t just a surgery; it was a journey from pain to possibility.

Dr. Justina Seyi-Olajide The pediatric surgeon from Nigeria recently volunteered on board the #GlobalMercy, saying, “I decided to volunteer with Mercy Ships because it was an opportunity to help people who are less privileged and lack access to care.”

When 10-month-old Memunatu arrived on the #GlobalMercy, the tumor on her neck had grown so large she could barely swallow. Dr. Leo Cheng knew the procedure would be both delicate and dangerous. “It went very slowly but very positively. And thank God,” he said afterward.

Learning on board goes far beyond the classroom! Each year, students on board the #GlobalMercy participate in the Student Life program, a 6-week program full of creativity, learning, and fun.

The Education and Training, and Advocacy (ETA) component of Mercy Ships is incredibly crucial to providing safe surgery, which involves partnering with each host nation’s healthcare professionals to help them better serve their own patients long into the future.
