In fact, the players always did have a choice. The NHL hastily wrote up a policy against one of their own rules. There was no way they could penalize anyone for using different tape.

Riddle me this...the NHL Rulebook 10.1 states that any colour of tape may be used on a hockey stick (except the knob of a goalie stick which must be white) so how does a quick 'policy change' supercede an actual rule without a rule change? #nhlisantiinclusion
