The LNG ship "methane slip" is cancelling out U.S. climate progress. My Inside Climate News colleagues Phil McKenna, Peter Aldhous calculate GHG pollution from the ships alone by 2023-4 has offset all of the emissions we've cut by deploying EVs on US roads. insideclimatenews.org/news/16042025/…

A global leader in low-carbon aluminum production plans to build a $4 billion smelter in wind-rich Oklahoma, though questions remain on how much of the power-hungry plant will be fueled by renewables. insideclimatenews.org/news/19052025/… My latest for Inside Climate News

A climate super pollutant that China and others agreed to destroy is being emitted at levels far higher than countries admit, posing a significant test to an international climate agreement. insideclimatenews.org/news/21052025/… My latest, with Foreign Policy's Lili Pike

In 2021, China joined the Kigali Agreement, and pledged to stop emitting HFC-23, a climate super pollutant 14,700x stronger than CO2. The latest atmospheric readings show China is way off track, Phil McKenna & I report in our deep dive: foreignpolicy.com/2025/05/21/chi…

Meanwhile, fuzzy language in Kigali means that int'l accountability is lacking. The UN Ozone Secretariat told Phil McKenna that the amount of HFC-23 countries report as destroyed is “taken at the face value” & there are currently no cases of noncompliance under investigation.

. Phil McKenna and I first covered China's HFC-23 emissions together in 2021, when we investigated China's long pattern of failure to reduce the powerful emissions: insideclimatenews.org/news/22092021/…

Climate advocates rejoiced when Beijing signed onto the Kigali Amendment in 2021, with the promise of cutting the super pollutant in China. However, the atmosphere now tells a different story, Lili Pike and Phil McKenna write. foreignpolicy.com/2025/05/21/chi…

HFC-23, a restricted pollutant 14,700 times worse for the climate than CO2, is being emitted at levels far higher than countries admit, sparking a global “whodunit” over the source of emissions insideclimatenews.org/news/21052025/… My latest, w/ Foreign Policy's Lili Pike

HFC-23 may be little known compared to carbon dioxide, but the pollution is significant, Lili Pike and Phil McKenna write. foreignpolicy.com/2025/05/21/chi…
