Quite a bit of Western dress owes itself to other cultures, and specifically to Asia. Most obviously, silk was invented in China. That material would later make up the bulk of neckwear production, an accessory that defined the coat-and-tie aesthetic. But everyone knows that, so

A striking analysis of popular board games' roots in imperialist reasoning—and why the future of play depends on reckoning with it. Playing Oppression by Mary Flanagan and Mikael Jakobsson is available now šŸ‘‰ bit.ly/3SrOKMC

Pulling some of my books & exhibition catalogs for class next week (a few won’t be useful for us, but want students to see that physical books can be really useful!).

Crazy busy week this week, but had good TEA prog. Today’s glam theme was ā€˜futuristic,’ I went as the Ghost (Angel?) of Christmases Yet To Come.

Our book for tomorrow in Gender & War is pretty grim reading on the whole (Roberts, What Soldiers Do) but has occasional moments of levity, such as this anecdote on the perils of cross-cultural communication.

My favorite 2 weeks in MT are immediately after the undergrads have vacated & before the tourists show up (so, usually mid-May). It’s generally cool & rainy and quiet, and happens to be a nice time of year to admire the way the setting sun hits the Bridgers.

Today marks twelve (!!) years together with this chonk. She is definitely showing her age in some ways, but generally, she's the same happy, cheerful Wumbum she's been all these years.

I am now an honorary member of the Dirty Sox Club (a BZN climbing institution), and one of our grad students brought me this sticker (that’s not actually Everest in the picture, but I appreciate the sentiment). We had a lovely afternoon out with 4 storied BZN climbers!
