Although the reasoning is bonkers, I really hope environmental groups use this law to fight polluters. Trucks modified to burn black smoke (rolling coal) for example would seem like an easy win

#LeaveTheLeaves is a great mantra for #gardening but there is a HUGE caveat! Full sun plants like cacti, annuals, and low growers should not be buried in leaves. They aren't evolved for it. Here is a patch of my cacti that I left under leaves and died.

The ability of some species to persist in polluted suburban areas amazes me. If cities adopted better habitat plans, the biodiversity that would be supported could improve drastically along with ecosystem services.

Did you know there is more than 1 working definition of species? The genetic definition allows for speciation to occur in a generation (e.g. Ploidy duplication). Morphology based definitions show island fox species arising in >2k years. Yet some organisms never seem to change.

Pictures of roadsides filled with Texas bluebonnets are common in spring every year. This species also occurs in grazed grasslands and savannahs at much lower densities. In shallow rocky soils they can be abundant like on roadsides. #spring #wildflowers #nature

Smart urban planning isn't always good for wildlife directly. Here a water catchment collects runoff from a gas station, preventing pollutants.from entering streams. The pond itself however is not suitable for animal consumption or habitation.

Using large branches and logs for plant bed borders provides much needed sheltering resources. Butterflies, moths, and beetles will pupate below the logs or between the peeling bark and wood. Cavity nesting bees can use old beetle holes. #wildlife #GardeningTwitter #pollinators
