1/2 I am thankful that I work in a school division that recognizes the importance of acknowledging the truth of our history in order to make a positive path forward. That being said, if you ever wonder why Indigenous people don’t ‘Just get over it’..... this is why.

Schools shouldn’t have cemeteries & the fact that every school did, tells you what you need to know about how we treated Indigenous Peoples then, and continue to today. It is our job as Non-Indigenous people to do the heavy lifting now. Our cousins have carried the load too long.

Each year, Saskatoon Public Schools appoints a water carrier and fire keeper to support First Nations ceremonies and activities. Water carrier for 2022-23 is Tiffany Smith, who will be principal of Caroline Robins Community School this fall. The fire keeper is Mount Royal Mustangs teacher Craig McCallum.

Marnie Ross, principal at Aden Bowman Collegiate, and Jemahl Manning, a teacher at Pleasant Hill School, had filled the roles since 2019-20. Water carrier and fire keeper were not named during the past two school years.
