Mayor Steinberg just showed up to Kevin McCarty's watch party.
“I haven’t officially endorsed in the race, but Kevin’s an old friend and I wanted to come by and say, ‘Great job,'' Steinberg told Maya C. Miller. 'I think that the future of the city is bright.”

It’s always a sweet surprise to get kind emails and letters in response to stories (a welcome reprieve from the unsolicited and disgruntled email rants).

This little token in the mail made my day today.

Thank you!!!

Today, The Sacramento Bee published my four-month-long investigation into Cal-OSHA and the Department of Industrial Relations.

This lovely note arrived on my desk today in response to my story about Sharon Quirk-Silva’s cursive handwriting bill.

Carole has inspired me to improve my own penmanship!

(Thankfully someone from USPS rescued the letter from the old Bee office on Q street)

Reporter Yanqi Xu did some good journalism.

Rather than respond to her findings, Jim Pillen went on the radio and said that her work wasn't worth reading because of where she came from.

How embarrassing. Infuriating. Sad.

Being a reporter, I never wanted to make myself the story. But this time, I thought there’s more at stake than myself. I think about the community I represent, and who might find the governor’s comment hurtful. A thread:

Student assistants at California State University could become the newest union of state employees. They have enough support to hold a union election, PERB says.

At the heart of their union push is a disagreement over the purpose of student jobs.

California's corrections department earned sub-par marks for personnel investigations.

The Inspector General found CDCR performed “sufficient” probes in only 23% of the misconduct cases the office tracked from Jan-June 2023.

A California Wingstop franchisee owes more than $3 million after the state's top wage theft investigator found that he underpaid more than 550 workers.

Elsewhere today, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a $20 fast-food minimum wage into law.

Did family inspire you to work for California?

The Bee wants to hear from multiple generations of state workers.

As costs rise and wages stagnate, do younger workers feel like past generations got a 'better deal' from state jobs?

California state scientists say they've hit an impasse with Gov. Gavin Newsom's bargaining team.

The scientists are the only group of state workers who failed to reach a contract deal with the state this year.

CA lege sends Gavin Newsom a bill that would give unemployment checks to workers who have been on strike for at least two weeks.

Writers and actors guilds would be eligible, as would UC workers last year.

Republicans denounced the bill as “horrible.”
