Good piece by edward miller on why part-privatising Kiwibank (‘opening Kiwibank up to private capital’) is a bad idea. Far from making Kiwibank a challenger of the Big 4 Aussie banks, it would likely give us the Big 5. Lower margins should be the aim; state ownership enables that
Bang on from edward miller here: selling part of Kiwibank to the Super Fund is just a pathway to it being on-sold. Kiwibank must stay govt owned!!
I wrote this explainer for The Spinoff about Ngā Mātāpono - the Waitangi Tribunal report on the Treaty Principles Bill. It’s part one of three. thespinoff.co.nz/atea/02-09-202…
Here is the final part of my three-part explainer on Ngā Mātāpono, the Waitangi Tribinal report on the Treaty Principles Bill. This one is about the specific ways the Bill will breach Te Tiriti (and in some ways already has) and the damage that will cause. thespinoff.co.nz/atea/04-09-202…
The Govt is preparing for the part-privatisation of Kiwibank. This won’t help Kiwibank challenge the big Aussie banks - it will make it more like them, & there are risks of Kiwibank being ripped up by private equity+more sell-offs if we let this happen: thepress.co.nz/nz-news/350404…
