#TIL that the earliest German cookbook was written c.1350. The introduction is rather charming: "This book tells of good food; it makes the novice cooks wise! [...] Whoever doesn't understand should see from this book how they can make great dishes from many small things."

I'm excited about this publication because manuals for penitents are especially useful for the study of folk belief - records of what people weren't supposed to be believing, or repented of believing, are a great source for what they actually believed...

Look if you want a room to smell of books, fill it with books.
