A gushing meltwater stream on Pets #glacier, Eastern Switzerland, today. Summer melting is in full swing these days, up to the highest peaks. The brownish snow surfaces higher up (Saharan dust) still do their contribution.

Disappearance of Pizol #glacier between 2006 and 2024 - R.I.P. Yesterday's visit to the mountain once coated with white glacier ice was depressing. Dark, unstable debris, and the trickling sound of melt water from the last patches of dead ice.

#Glaciers as seen from beneath are just fascinating! So blue! 🤩 This beautiful but fleeting place visited today is only here though because of rapid glacier retreat, leaving the water-carved channels dry.

The raw power of melt water on a hot summer day as seen out of the #glacier portal at Rhonegletscher. This is water nourishing one of the biggest streams of Europe from the Alps down to the Mediterranean Sea. Dynamics will change though once the ice is gone...

Moody weather on a dying #glacier. We conducted GLAMOS measurements on Plaine Morte today. "Dark" is the best word to describe our impressions. Despite lots of snow in winter, the ice loss was substantial - once again 😢

Highly interesting structures in #glacier ice. No, it's not a borehole but fully natural. Any idea how this formed? Maybe a recrystallised, deformed crevasse?

The terminus of Vadret da Morteratsch, largest #glacier of Eastern 🇨🇭, has completely changed in just 1 year. What used to be a gentle edge of the ice has retreated into a vertical 20 m ice wall with a river/lake in front. Scenic, but another brutal expression of climate change

Walking underneath a #glacier in a proglacial lake. Extraordinary experience today! And hey, it's not a good sign: only in dying ice, such channels are accessible - and will soon be gone completely
