Landspout tornado spotted near Rusty Point on April 19th! These events, while not rare, go mostly unnoticed due to our topographically diverse area. Credit to Geremy Clarion who captured these pictures. For more info on this, and other phenomena, visit weather.gov/glossary

Beautiful 953mb low over the eastern Bering Sea this morning, fueling a major winter storm with dangerous winds and heavy precipitation across Southcentral AK. A 110 mph wind gust was recorded on the Anchorage Hillside early this morning!

New Orleans, LA has received more than double the amount of snowfall we've received here in Anchorage, AK since the start of meteorological winter (Dec. 1). New Orleans: 8.0" Anchorage: 3.8" NWS New Orleans, we'd like our snow back. Or at least some King Cake in return. 😉🙃

After record-setting snow last winter, Anchorage’s snow depth has just dropped to 0” in January for just the 4th time over the past 40 years. An ongoing atmospheric river is bringing up to 1-2.5” of rain on frozen ground, causing widespread flooding, with wind gusts up to 55 mph.

I’ve been encouraged by the outpouring of support for all of us at NWS/NOAA. There’s a few misconceptions I’d like to address. My termination wasn’t due to performance or probationary status. But this was never about my situation. The cuts to NOAA/NWS make us all less safe.
