The shared use path and roadway on the Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi, Texas has fully opened. This officially completes the longest concrete segmental cable stayed bridge in North America. The main span length is 1,661 feet supported by 538 feet tall towers.

Precast deck panels getting a closure pour. This creates the riding surface of the bridge. A high slump concrete mix is used for the dense epoxy coated rebar. This type of rebar protects against the deicing salts used during the winter.

The rebuild of the Francis Scott Key Bridge is manufacturing steel pipe piles. These will be the foundations for the new cable stayed bridge. The steel piles are 8 feet in diameter, which is the largest driven pile I have seen. The test pile lengths are as long as 220 feet.

The bridge design for the rebuild of the Francis Scott Key Bridge used a scaled model to measure scour. Scour is the removal of soil around the foundations of the bridge during long term, 100 year, and 500 year storm events. Bridges are designed for that loss of soil.

When we first started working from home my wife listened in on many work calls. That is when she learned that as a bridge engineer I get to talk about erection plans, bolt holes, and penetration details all day.

The demolition of the existing Francis Scott Key Bridge involves removing the concrete bridge deck. This involves sawcutting the deck into small pieces for equipment to handle. The concrete will be crushed and used as base for a construction access road. Rebar is recycled.
