Today, we had the huge honor of hosting Eugene Koonin in the lab. He inspires so much of our research. Full day of brainstorming on evolution followed by wine, diner and stories on being a bioinformatician in the 80'/ 90's, when genbank was delivered on floppy disks 😀🤓.

Science, sun, cooking, climbing, canoeing and ... le Pont du Gard! Our lab retreat featured our postdocs teaching us about cryoEM, metagenomics, algorithms and incredbiles talks from our 💫 speakers Antoine Decrulle Imane El Meouche & live @FrancoisRousset. Great science in great setting!

🚨Super excited to share our pre-print describing how we used genomics to discover a family of anti-phage lanthipeptides from Actinobacteria 🦠 This marks a significant expansion in the number of bacterial natural products involved in chemical defense. A thread 👇: MDMLab

Did you see the bridge RNA papers yesterday? Bacterial transposons promote programmable, RNA-guided DNA recombination. Remarkably, we found that the recombinase was co-opted in archaea and eukaryotes for widspread RNA-guided RNA modification, an essential function in humans!

Sedentary chromosomal integrons (SCIs) are biobanks of anti-phage defence systems! In a huge collaboration with the Didier Mazel lab, we showed that these flexible genetic platforms encode known defences and further discovered 16 new systems. A thread (1/n) doi.org/10.1101/2024.0…

It has recently been described that bacteria and eukaryotes share some part of their immune systems. But what do they share exactly? How did this evolve? We propose the concept of ancestral immunity to explore this emerging topic. Some answers but mostly questions 🙃.

Excited to introduce AntiDefenseFinder - a free, open source tool that detects anti-defense systems in any genomic sequence. Available here to toggle on/off: defensefinder.mdmlab.fr. Read below for our insights into the >47K detectable systems📈 tiny.cc/8xrizz

Out in Cell Host & Microbe: Conservation of antiviral systems across domains of life reveals immune genes in humans. Using phylogenomics, we traced antiphage systems in eukaryotes, predicted human homologs and validated their immune function in human cells! cell.com/cell-host-micr…

No as 🤯😍 as Max Wilkinson incredible video about DRT antiphage system. But here is a short video summarizing our recent Cell Host & Microbe publication demonstrating how we use bacterial antiphage systems to reveal hidden human immune genes! youtube.com/watch?v=xN1mHN…

I am more than happy to share our preprint about the evolution of non-visual and visual opsins in fishes, fruit of a collaboration between the Salzburger lab (Lily Fogg , Walter Salzburger Lab ) and Fabio Cortesi (Fabio Cortesi). biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Interested in plasmid biology? Our new preprint is now available!!! 🚨 In this work, we analyzed thousands of diverse bacterial plasmids to characterize for the first time one of the most fundamental aspects of plasmid biology: Plasmid copy number. 1/7 👇

Meet The Shielded Plasmid🛡️🧬 Our new nature paper reveals how plasmids outsmart bacterial defenses during conjugation. It's all about being in the right place at the right time! The positioning of anti-defense genes boosts transfer efficiency🧵(1/7) nature.com/articles/s4158…

Out Nature Microbiology, we predicted phage-bacteria interactions in E. coli species using only genomic information. Adsorption, not defense systems, is the main driver at this scale (relevant for a phage therapy context), leading to tailored cocktails! nature.com/articles/s4156… 🧵👇
