Worth noting that Robert Jenrick was a member of the government which defunded every part of the criminal justice system, including prisons, and ignored years of warnings that the prisons were close to overflowing. Any criminals “let off” have been let off by his government.

There have always been two Joe Bidens. The empathetic, decent, big-hearted leader, forged in loss and grief, finding the good in his friends and opponents, in love with America, arms wide and open with space for everyone. And there’s the blowhard with a chip on his shoulder,

People seem surprised at the Just Stop Oil sentences. This kind of thing often happens when judges feel the need to set an example. It’s a reminder that keeping judges in check is a vital part of solving our prison problems. I wrote on this a while back: prospectmagazine.co.uk/politics/labou…

Ultimately, you cannot put people like Liz Truss, Boris Johnson, Nadine Dorries, Gavin Williamson & Chris Grayling in charge of things and expect those things to work. The "natural party of government" needs to ask how it became so unserious about the people it chose to govern.

The riots that erupted across Britain are the most significant since 2011.  Tim Newburn who lead the 2011 Reading the Riots study in partnership with the The Guardian, identifies the key differences between 2024 and 2011, and calls for an official inquiry. blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandpol…

Well said sir. There are people who have genuine concerns about immigration, and who are entitled to feel these concerns haven’t always been listened to. But the rioters aren’t among them.

This is a poor article about a good decision. The Guardian should work harder for its quotes. Or give the story to a security rather than political correspondent.

The Conservative plan was not to send “failed” asylum seekers to Rwanda, it was to send all of them regardless of their claims. Try to get the details right.

Liking this speech. Strong section on immigration and racism - and on the arts. A nod to Shostakovich. A paean to the Lake District. And a strong finish.

This is a silly point-scoring game by the Conservatives. The PM is absolutely right to dismiss the question with the disdain it deserves. There are serious unresolved challenges about containing Chinese influence in the UK. Sadly, the Conservatives did little to deal with them

Everyone saying “no we can’t let the NHS use a proper joined up digital patient database, it’s all part of a plot to privatise British healthcare and sell your data” should be forced to read the dozens (hundreds?) of case studies like these bbc.co.uk/news/health-67…

I think Badenoch was by far the better choice for the Tories but her judgement is clearly suspect and this is an excellent early example. Completely misses the point of Partygate.

This “Starmer spends too much time abroad” thing is risible. He’s a new PM, establishing relationships, in a world which is on fire- all of which affecting voters at home.

What went wrong with immigration policy over the last 25 years? Where to start… I offered my thoughts in this BBC documentary, aired last night: bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episod…

Would be a sensible move. We only have one carrier group. Much better to concentrate on funding that properly, and the rest of the Navy, rather than carrying on overstretched, with ships left out of service for long periods to save money.
