Thank you scientists and staff Brookhaven Lab and @NSLSII for giving our students the opportunity to identify the chemical makeup of the microplastics they collected from water bottles and surface water. #WIProud

Look at that Lichen!! Analyzing atmospheric pollutants using Tender Energy X-Ray Spectroscopy at the National Synchrotron Light Source II Brookhaven Lab #NSLSII #WIProud

Students in Ms. Kroll’s Biotechnology course are engineering their own gel electrophoresis apparatuses! They decided on materials for the electrode and predicted how different voltage affects outcomes. My favorite part-they extracted the dye from M&Ms. West Islip HS Paul Romanelli, Ed.D.

When Risk=Reward! Brian Haldenwang and I tried STEM electrophoresis kit from Bio-Rad Explorer. Ss had choice in electrodes and voltage, then used STEM skills to create their own electrophoresis chambers. Now Ss can apply this learning to their own research! Dr. Debbie Langone #WIProud

WIHS senior, Sabrina, is presenting today in the semi-final round of JSHS. Her project: An Analysis of Microplastics in Plastic Water Bottles, was supported through the SPARK program at Brookhaven National Labs. Congrats to her and her Research teacher, Ms. Kroll!! Mary Kroll

Congratulations to Mary Kroll, West Islip High School Research Teacher and Principal Investigator for BNL’s SPARK spectroscopy collaboration, for her recent publication and acceptance to present at LPSC! West Islip HS WestIslipHSPTSA Mary Kroll

So proud of these West Islip students! #WIproud Mary Kroll

So proud of our Long Island Science and Engineering Fair finalists! Ready to share their research today. #WIProud Dr. Debbie Langone Paul Romanelli, Ed.D.

📣CONGRATULATIONS to Emma for winning 1st place at LISEF for her project: “Analysis of Microplastic Compositions in Salt and Freshwater on the South Shore of Long Island” Emma will attend ISEF for the international fair! West Islip HS Paul Romanelli, Ed.D. Dawn Morrison Mary Kroll

Congratulations to Asfar & Emma! Asfar earned Honorable Mention in Chemistry and Emma 1st Place in Earth and Environment Science, the National Geographic - Cultivating Empathy for the Earth Award & the Regional Stockholm Junior Water Prize. West Islip HS Paul Romanelli, Ed.D. Mary Kroll

Udall Middle School Research students are visiting the high school Research students to conduct a DNA extraction lab, learn about the various research classes in high school, and listen to HS student presentations. Mary Kroll West Islip HS Brian Haldenwang kris

What an honor to share the research our high schools students are doing through the SPARK program at the #NSLSII Brookhaven Lab at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference. Abstract 2521 #LPSC2023 #WIproud West Islip HS Paul Romanelli, Ed.D. Dr. Debbie Langone

Congratulations to Sabrina! She was a poster session winner at Brookhaven National Laboratory! Her investigation of the chemical structure of microplastics was inspired by her involvement in the WIHS chapter Thirst Project. Mary Kroll Miss Ferruzzi West Islip HS

It’s official! Emma’s poster is all set up and ready for the International Science and Engineering Fair! We have a great team of Long Island students sharing their research this week. #RegeneronISEF Dr. Bridgeman Dr. Debbie Langone Paul Romanelli, Ed.D.

Thank you to Brookhaven Lab scientists at #NSLSII for inspiring and supporting Emma West Islip HS and Jack WHB Schools in their research through the SPARK program. They have had an incredible experience sharing their findings at #RegeneronISEF. Dianna Dr. Debbie Langone

Congratulations Emma 🎉 for winning the NOAA Science Communication Award at #RegeneronISEF for your research on the composition of microplastics Sharlene Pitman #WIProud West Islip HS Dr. Bridgeman Dr. Debbie Langone Paul Romanelli, Ed.D.

What a great day for scientific field work! Ss analyzed site geography, water chemistry, and performed a biological survey as part of “A Day in the Life of a River”. Many thanks to the scientists who came out to guide the students. #WIProud Paul Romanelli, Ed.D. Dr. Bridgeman Brian Haldenwang

Congratulations Kristie Miss Ferruzzi on being named a NYS Master Teacher! This achievement requires dedication to improving your practice, a growth mindset and active professional collaboration. Have fun on this STEM journey! #WIProud Paul Romanelli, Ed.D. Dr. Bridgeman NYS Master Teacher Program

STEM Coders Club - coding fun during the solar eclipse! Thank you Brookhaven Lab OEP for introducing us to SparkFun Electronics sensors as a way to begin learning scientific computing. #WIProud Paul Romanelli, Ed.D. Dr. Bridgeman
