Our latest plaice survivability trial is underway in Castletownbere with support from the crew of MFV Róise Caitríona. In light of COVID-19 restrictions, the work we normally carry out Hurling_Kerry when back from sea is happening outdoors on the pier.

This month MFV Emerald Shore crew have been working with our gear trial team testing large-mesh escape panels to reduce unwanted catch in the Nephrops fishery This gear technology, widely used by Irish vessels, is reducing bycatch by up to 90% More info: bim.ie

Today we're out testing new underwater light technology in Greencastle with Skipper Paddy McClenaghan and his crew on MFV Foyle Warrior. This ongoing work is a prominent #sustainability measure in the Celtic Sea reducing up to 80% bycatch of skates and rays and 40% of cod.

This year our focus for seaweed is increasingly turning to more valuable red weeds used for wrapping sushi e.g. Porphyra umbilicalis (aka Nori) We're hopeful we can perfect our cultivation methods to supply Irish grown Nori to the marketplace.

BIM and Steven Dirrane of the MFV Kittiwake are off the Aran Islands, on this sunny Galway afternoon, carrying out Dual codend trials. The Dual separates prawn and fish to improve sorting time, reduction in undersize catch and to improve fish quality.
