A5 If you never see yourself in books and media, you quickly get the message that you don’t count and don’t matter. It’s often more work for teachers to find books about minorities they teach, but it’s worth the effort not just for iPoC but White children too. #SyncUpChat

A5 We’ve all heard “Write what you know,” yet we perpetually buy & read books not written by #OwnVoices artists. Supporting the work of authors of color not only exposes kids to cultural ideas they won’t get from outsiders but opens doors for more minority artists. #SyncUpChat

A6 Make friends with your public & school librarians & pick their brains. Seek out ALA diversity-focused book awards like Coretta Scott King & Pura Belpre. Talk with other teachers who are using diverse books, and read diverse books aloud to your students (all ages). #SyncUpChat

A7 We know that engagement impacts academic achievement, and students who feel valued in class and feel represented in the literature perform better. I highly recommend Gloria Boutte’s book Educating African American Students: And How are the Children to learn more. #SyncUpChat

A7 I also recommend Ebony Elizabeth Thomas’s new book The Dark Fantastic: Race and Imagination from Harry Potter to Hunger Games, who says the lack of fantasy books about children of color isn’t just a failure of the book industry but a failure of the imagination. #SyncUpChat
