The physicists working on the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole already live like on a Mars Colony You can follow their day-to-day activities on their blog: icecube.wisc.edu/news/life-at-t… The sun has just begun to rise.

Popular science articles often repeat the cliché that around 400,000 years after the Big Bang, the Universe suddenly went dark. The truth is much more interesting, as Martin Bauer explains — and as I wrote in my Scientific American blog long ago scientificamerican.com/blog/degrees-o…

A helium nucleus is made from a 2 protons and 2 neutrons Physicists at RHIC have now produced a state from 1 anti-proton, 2 anti-neutrons and an anti-lambda particle. Purely anti-matter with an anti-strange quark The heaviest hypernucleus ever observed! bnl.gov/newsroom/news.…

We have only just began to explore heavier antinuclear and hypernuclei, extending the isotope table to negative neutron and proton numbers and into a third dimension (strange quarks)

"Airplane" comes from aeroplane "wandering through the air" from greek ‚(asteres) planētai‘ „wandering (stars)," which is the greek word and also the etymological root for "planets" In this tradition ‚starship‘ is exactly the appropriate level of hubris

Designing a test to spot extraordinary talent isn’t easy. Arguably your undergrad *is* that test, probing your skills in many advanced areas I‘d also question the equation „elite university“=„elite education“. Their real selling point is the network you make

Amateurs I had physics professors that would win that competition blindfolded, with their back turned to the blackboard, and drawing a dotted line

Not a stupid question at all. Electromagnetism is symmetric when it comes to antimatter, just the charges are flipped Replacing electrons with muons or (hypothetically) nuclei with hypernuclei with heavier quarks would change the equation, e.g. the atom would be much smaller

Just wrapped up the final lecture at the Science and Technology Facilities Council HEP Summer School 2024 A great event and fantastic students! You can't appreciate the work experimentalists do enough, I'm always impressed by what they do during a PhD They truly carry the field on their shoulders

Modern Sisyphus would just be explaining basic science concepts to pseudoscience grifters online with the twitter character limit and after every thread they deliberately forget what you already taught them

Nothing he says is wrong, not even controversial. But advances in engineering are what drives advances in science. It's a bit naive to think the impact from SpaceX innovation won't last

When I read the absolutely unhinged tweets on the Second World War and Hitlers plans for Europe the algorithm is pushing now, I'm happy I work in physics and only have to argue with people that misunderstand dark matter or string theory. What a shit show!
