ASCOLT trial was negative, but here’s another trial for aspirin as an adjuvant for colorectal cancer. ALASCCA was biomarker driven - only patients with PI3K pathway mutation were included. 👉 >50% reduction for recurrence with aspiring. This is HUGE!

In what is surely the crowning achievement of a middling colorectal surgeon from the periphery, I finally get to quote Shakespeare! On a more serious note, this would be really interesting to replicate for other procedures. What is postoperative mortality? Umeå University

Thanks for highlighting our trial, recruiting since September 2024. More centres open this year and hopefully we’ll meet our inclusion target in 2027. Much to do and learn about defunctioning stomas! Cancerfonden and Vetenskapsrådet have generously funded the trial.

Some (but not all) patients might do better without a stoma. This is assessed in SELSA trial by Martin Rutegard et al, see 👉 pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39887540/ PROSPERITY is about ’if you need a stoma, which one should it be?’

So, many are mulling over how to interpret the results of PERFECT-Antibiotics trial. I will share my thoughts in a thread 🧵

So this is interesting: Opinions among responders are exactly 50:50 antibiotics vs no antibiotics while awaiting appendectomy for presumed uncomplicated appendicitis 🤔 Even when you have the best data available, it’s still not self-evident how to interpret the evidence
