Finally out! Genetic engineering of mammalian RNAi in vivo: 1) change Dicer gene to express a truncated variant. 2) add a transgene expressing long dsRNA. 3) add a targeted reporter. We see RNAi but with siRNA levels at par with highly abundant miRNAs. doi.org/10.1038/s44319…

Woolly mammoths survived on Wrangel Island until 2000 BC! But why did they go extinct? Were they doomed once stuck on the island? We went to Siberia, collected bones & teeth, and sequenced 21 complete genomes. Here is what we found (🧵) Paper in Cell: cell.com/cell/fulltext/…

Today’s issue of Cell has 2 mammoth papers (w. CPG staff)! Marcela Sandoval-Velasco et al. presents a discovery of 3D structure in the Chris Waddle mammoth genome: cell.com/cell/fulltext/… Marianne Dehasque et al. disentangles the mammoth’s extinction using 21 genomes: cell.com/cell/fulltext/…

With the Nobel prize to microRNAs in 2024 and the Nobel prize to aDNA in 2022 it looks like what I did during my PhD and what I am working on right now is kind of the medley field to be at. But maybe I am just arriving 30 years later to the party 😅

Arctic animals are uniquely adapted to tolerate the cold. Which are the genes behind these adaptations? And, crucially, when did selectively important mutations in these genes occur? Come join my group for an ancient DNA journey through evolutionary time!
