Still wondering what the govt wants from the Accord? The Employment White Paper spells it out, "tertiary education needs to deliver the skilled workers for the jobs of the future."

A speech of a great leader of our sector with the courage to put equity and students first at an event that tries to measure things other than that

Many thanks to ⁦The Australian⁩ for running opEd by Bruce Chapman & me on why giving those closest to serious challenges responsibility, funding and respect worked so well to overcome HIV/AIDS in Australia. Same principles are at the heart of The Voice. Trust the people.

Rick, good important article. Not sure of source for attached para, but a bit misleading. Domestic u’grads generally must be Commonwealth supported (CS), so fees are $4k to $12k pa. Only a few domestic students ineligible for CS & internationals pay fees of this magnitude.

Peter, Where is the dislike key? Why shift the debate from discussion of whether there is a balance of power between employers & workers to one about union militancy? Don’t we want a fair distribution of social / economic benefits? Your equations may not tell us how to get that.

Aren’t you just adding hyperbole again by saying ‘the labor movement has forgotten’. I think most in the labor movement simply think limits on the ability to strike went too far.

Peter Tulip (@peter_tulip) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Mark Warburton I say forgotten because, in the stuff I have read, (from the political, industrial and academic wings of the labor movement, but not comprehensive) I have not seen an acknowledgment of tradeoffs. I will revise that assessment if you show me counter-examples.

Maybe most believe the defenders of capital will run those arguments. They don’t see a need to, given their current objective is to restore balance. Peter Tulip talks about trade offs - not employed as an academic, but has the credentials. He seems supportive of the status quo.

Andrew Norton's Mapping Australian higher education is a national asset. It is great that the latest edition is available in a year of discussion about the future of the sector.

The media's preference for "balance" over evidence and expertise is one reason policy discussions are so bad. Cranks get too much airtime and research gets too little.

If one has, as Midnight Oil sang, a short memory, it might seem that government has been helping families. But looked at over a longer period, the largesse of successive governments is intoxicating. Yes, 9.5 years, but it's only because I don't have the 10 year figures.
