In Super Mario Galaxy, a planet can be seen in the distance in Good Egg Galaxy that should not exist. Attempting to fly to that planet makes it transform into a different one when Mario gets close. This is actually due to a completely wrong low-polygon model being assigned to it.

In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the item roulette is a meaningless illusion meant to give the players a false sense of agency over which items they get. The game's debug mode shows that the item is decided on the frame the player touches the Item Box, and the roulette is irrelevant.

In the "Boot Camp" microgame in WarioWare: Smooth Moves, the character is normally the player's Mii. However, if the Mii is corrupted or otherwise unavailable, the game loads a failsafe character called OnionHeader instead.

In 1994, development of Yoshi's Island briefly went through a "baby wizard" phase whereby Baby Mario was considered to be replaced by an original baby wizard character. I have compiled a timeline of Baby Mario's development based on known asset timestamps.

In a cutscene before the final boss battle in Luigi's Mansion 3, Peach briefly deforms by severely elongating her neck. Below is a comparison of her usual neck length and the extended neck seen in this cutscene.

The Curlup R is an optional boss in Mario & Luigi: Brothership who has 35,000 HP, which is such an absurdly large amount that it is more than all final bosses in the series, including Brothership itself, put together.

Upon repeat playthroughs of Super Mario Odyssey, you may notice the warp paintings having changed destinations. These actually depend on what answers Mario gives when asked in what order to visit kingdoms. Below is a full guide of painting connections based on your decisions.

An oversight in Super Paper Mario can result in an extremely unfortunate scenario. If a player defeats the last Sammer Guy in a chapter and then goes back to a previous room, the goal will be gone upon returning to the final room, undoing a whole chapter's worth of progress.

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe contains an unused "Devious Flip Block" in its files. While its code has been expunged, dataminers theorize it would have acted like a malicious one-way wall, trapping Mario underneath it.

In Super Mario RPG, Mario's house is called "PipeHouse". This was changed to "MarioHouse" in the Switch version. However, it contains unused graphics that still read "PipeHouse", suggesting the original plan was to be faithful, which was undermined for an unknown reason.

(Caution: flashing) In Super Mario World, Bowser *is* lightning. The Bowser object starts up the lightning effect in his boss battle. Spawning him anywhere else does not make him appear, but does increase the severity of the lightning with each additional Bowser.

It is relatively well known that in Super Mario Bros. 3, Chain Chomps break free from their chains after about 1.5 minutes of being on screen. What is much more obscure is that the same happens in the Super Mario Maker games, but much later, after around 4.4 minutes.

In Mario & Luigi: Brothership, the Return Pipe requires flat ground to be used. If Luigi is standing on the edge of a slope on the moment of activation, an error in his pathfinding algorithm may make him run in place and vibrate erratically for the duration of the scene.

For a long time, humorous clips of Mario saying "Hello door" and "Another door?!" in Super Mario Sunshine were known about, but presumed unused. It turns out they can actually be heard in the game by performing an unreasonably specific action in the debug testing room.
