Today being Mothers Day & with all the buzz around mitochondria, be sure to thank your mother for (w/rare exception) all your mitochondrial genes. During fertilization the egg contributes to all or near all mitochondria in the zygote (the single cell result of sperm-egg fusion).

Groundbreaking research from Vivianne Tawfik, MD, PhD has uncovered how certain nerve cells, when injured or aging, turn into “zombie-like” cells. These cells don’t die, but they cause more pain and inflammation.

Microglia feet are highly dynamic and can be in contact with dense networks of axons. In this video by our #ElectronMicroscopy team using MICrONS data, a microglia (purple) contacts with an excitatory pyramidal neuron (gold). Slowly the axons under the feet are revealed.

“Neurons that FIRE together, WIRE together!” 🔥 This quote was coined by neuroscientist Carla Shatz, PhD and is based on a theory originally proposed by Donald Hebb, PhD - a psychologist who helped shape our understanding of how learning and memory work in the brain. 🧠⚡️
