Too many people have lost the ability to distinguish a politician responding to a question from a politician answering a question. Journalists have a duty to educate the public on this distinction. #journalism #canpoli #nspoli

Too much energy is spent on the minority of students who misbehave, while not enough energy is spent on the majority of students who act reasonably. #edchat #edutwitter

One reason we tolerate homelessness is the thinking that the homeless deserve their fate through bad choices, while the rest of us are housed purely due to our own cleverness and hard work, not luck.  Many who are housed today are only a crisis away from being homeless tomorrow.

There’s a false dichotomy in HRM’s debate about “strong mayor”powers. There has to be a middle ground between dictatorial powers and a mayor who has no more power than a councillor. The province needs to find that balanced middle ground. #halifax #nspoli

We need to take a look at how schools, and parents, are raising boys. Positive examples of healthy masculinity are critical for boys as they develop into young men.

Putting enormous powers in the hands of one person is a separate discussion from whether HRM Council is making the right decisions. I can disagree with Council’s decision without believing the Premier or Mayor should nullify it. #halifax #nspoli

Opening day icebreakers, and similar activities, are only typically imposed on faculty to make administrators feel useful. Try being really useful and get out of teachers’ way so that they can prepare for the year. #edchat #edutwitter

Administrators: Get out of your office and meet faculty and students where they are. You can’t get a good read on school culture and effectiveness from behind a desk. #edchat #edutwitter

It’s not about what sort of rules your school has, it’s about how consistently you apply those rules and whether you follow through with appropriate sanctions. #edchat #education #Discipline

If teachers are finding their work overwhelming or if they take no joy in returning to work, it’s almost always due to lack of support from administration. Find out what will provide support for faculty and staff, and resolve to implement it this year. #edchat #education

A great school isn’t just a building full of great teachers. It’s also a community of colleagues who enjoy and support one another. That’s why building a healthy school culture is so important. #edchat #edutwitter #principals

One of the great things about teaching, and there are many, is heading back to school in the fall. It’s one of the few professions where you get a fresh start once a year. All of your past mistakes can be set aside and you have a clean slate to do it better. #edchat #education

If I had to boil down all of my advice for school leaders into just a few words it would be this: Listen to teachers. #edchat #education

If you’re an administrator and you haven’t taught, or you haven’t taught in a long time, you can’t possibly understand what teachers have to deal with with, and you therefore can’t know how you need to support them. #edchat #edutwitter #principals

If you want to reduce math anxiety, teach them more math. If you want to reduce exam anxiety, give them more exams. More proficiency and practice reduces anxiety. Less proficiency and practice increases it. #edchat #edutwitter
