'Participants of a recent Health and Social Care Committee evidence session were from the alcohol industry, where they misinformed politicians on the evidence base regarding how to reduce alcohol harm, while claiming undue credit for positive trends.'

Great thread on new work from Nason Maani Mark Petticrew May van Schalkwyk

Our Chair, Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, resigned as government alcohol adviser as the partnership stood to undermine efforts to protect public health.

Health policy must be free from harmful industry influence.

In the UK, the alcohol industry remains an active participant in alcohol policy development.

Policy discourse should not be polluted by commercial interests, say Nason Maani May van Schalkwyk Alice Wiseman Mark Petticrew

New evidence submitted by Mark Petticrew May van Schalkwyk and Nason Maani to the Health and Social Care Committee Prevention Inquiry, correcting the misleading claims made by alcohol industry representatives at the evidence session on alcohol, is well worth a read🔎

On 6th Feb Health and Social Care Committee took evidence from alcohol industry stakeholders on alcohol harms

There was a great deal of selective evidence given
In the spirit of balance, here are arguments to counter industry PR

Good to see BBC News (UK) holding Mayor of London to his promises. We should all have the right to control how much gambling advertising we want to experience bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…

new open access paper in Soc Sci & Medicine on the WHO Foundation and corporate philanthropy

we argue that the creation of a foundation at one remove from WHO has displaced issues of financing to more secluded spaces less amenable to scrutiny

Concerningly, continues to be delivered in the UK & other countries, an issue we analyse here: journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…. More countries should follow Ireland's lead in officially advising schools to not use education materials funded by harmful industries. I-CAAN

Any evidence that the limits are safe?

Any evidence that 2.5 sec spin speed is safe?

Rather than tinkering at the edges, we need fundamental change:
- a statutory duty of care with right of redress.
- control of advertising
- duty on GC to prevent harm not permit gambling.

As Rebecca Cassidy and I have previously argued 'The incremental changes to gambling regulation proffered by the government’s white paper are superficially appealing, but limited reforms will ultimately help to conserve flawed legislation.' bmj.com/content/384/bm…

Disappointing to see gov seeking evidence on reducing harm related to alcohol from the industry and industry-funded organisations, in spite of clear evidence from previous submissions that these have been used to dispute evidence, promote self-regulation and undermine World Health Organization (WHO) recs
