An insight from the #SustainableTeaching project: This one is oftentimes outside of our control. It's even hard for admins to address scheduling barriers. What creative solutions have you seen to scheduling? #MakeTeachingSustainable ASCD

…. I mean why even reveal our names I’m sure the 4-year-olds in pre-school would really respond to that kind of impartiality…..

Over 90% of Finnish teachers remain in education for entirety of career. How? Teachers are respected as professionals, given adequate time for planning during the school day, and more autonomy in school decisions. Maybe that's why we lose nearly 50% of teachers every 5 years!

It’s crazy to me that there are people recording and screaming at mothers and fathers as they carry their toddlers and babies to shelter from a storm.

My thoughts on instructional coaching: I enjoy a good conversation about instructional practices. However I often find that issues in instruction often boil down to the loads of time it takes to prepare for a lesson in all the ways one could. So it’s tough to make it worth it.

This is a major reason I dislike high stakes testing. Not because of the the testing itself even but because of what it has done and is doing to education!

Perhaps I’m missing the point but it doesn’t seem to follow that using AI makes one less professional. AI will be a tool for many professionals, including teachers. It’s a tool like any other. We wouldn’t say an accountant who uses a spreadsheet is not a professional.

If we want to create writers in our classrooms, they need to WRITE. This means that sometimes they will write things incorrectly, or maybe even *gasp* misspell words. If we chase perfection, we will not create writers. We will cultivate a fear of writing.

I am constantly asking myself what it means to live a good life. I find that consistent curiosity has made all the difference in how I view schools and education.

Time and time again in the #SustainableTeaching survey, teachers shared that they did not have enough time to complete basic responsibilities. I'm sure there are opportunities for teachers to be more efficient, but the reality is that teachers have far too many responsibilities.

Talking to me co worker about the laughable idea of our SPED teachers “working to rule”. He was telling me about his evening plans and the 3 hrs of paperwork he would need to complete.

I’m not so convinced that simply moving experienced teachers to the highest needs schools would get the results we want. I’ve seen the amount of effort young teachers bring to their work in these schools. It’s not something that most mid/late career teachers are willing to do

If you’re not looking at any and every possibility to increase planning time for teachers, you’re going to need to get ready to try to fill a lot of positions in the coming years. It’s absurd to expect teachers do their job at a high level with so little planning time.
