Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel (19 Aug 1883-1971) was closely associated with the Ballets Russes in the 1920s as generous patron and costume designer. She saw her friend Serge Diaghilev in Venice shortly before his death on 19 August 1929. It was her birthday! She paid for his funeral.

On 21 August 1929 in Venice, a funeral barge carried the body of Serge Diaghilev from the Grand Hotel (where he died) to the city's island cemetery. Among close friends following in a gondola were Serge Lifar and Coco Chanel. Coco picked up Diaghilev's funeral 'and' hotel bill.

Natalia Dudinskaya (21 Aug 1912-2003) was from Kharkov, where she first learned ballet. In 1931 she graduated from Leningrad's Vaganova School straight into the Kirov company. There, she danced leading roles until well into the 1950s. One of her last partners was Rudolf Nureyev.

On 22 August 1954 in Edinburgh, a Diaghilev Exhibition was formally opened (by Alicia Markova) as part of the Edinburgh Festival. It marked the 25th anniversary of Serge Diaghilev's death. This Ballets Russes exhibit proved to be so popular it would be transferred to London.
