All your baby needs in their cot is a fitted sheet on top of their firm, flat, waterproof mattress, and then either a firmly tucked-in blanket or a sleep bag. Having extra items in a baby’s cot can increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and accidents.

The feet-to-foot position is when a baby is placed right at the bottom of their cot so that their feet are touching the end. It helps prevent your little one from wriggling down under their firmly tucked-in blanket (no higher than shoulder height)

Sleep your baby in the same room you’re in, day and night, until they’re at least 6mth old. Research shows that sharing a room in this way reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

The 1991 ‘Back to Sleep’ campaign resulted in a massive reduction in the number of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) cases, so lie your baby on their back for each sleep. - (Note: Once baby has mastered rolling, it's okay for them to choose their own sleeping position)

Where should my baby’s cot go? Firstly (and this is the big one), it should go in the same room as you, day and night, for at least the first 6mth. But we also recommend the cot is not too close to any radiators, windows, air con systems, or hazards such as blind cords.

Starting school might raise questions for bereaved siblings as they realise other children don’t have ‘a sister in the stars’ or ‘an angel brother’. We've written an age-appropriate story (with pictures) for you to read with your child to prepare them: bit.ly/3T5Ld8d

Sleeping twins in the same cot is called ‘co-bedding’ and it can be a helpful space-saving option. Place your babies at opposite ends of the cot so they can both be in the feet-to-foot position. Once one of them shows signs of rolling, they will need separate sleep spaces.

Co-sleeping is when a baby shares the same bed with an adult for most of the night (not just to be comforted/fed). But whether you have twins, multiples or kids of different ages, you should only do so with one child at a time. bit.ly/3Td2cFY

Space-saving ideas to help families share a room with their sleeping baby, day and night, for at least the first 6mth. - (Note: Bouncers, hammocks, beanbags, nests/pods and baby swings are not suitable for sleep as they aren’t firm and flat.)
