Key difference between fire intensity and burn severity. Fire intensity is the heat and flame length. Burn severity is the impact on vegetation and soils. You can often get higher burn severity in slower moving and low intensity backing fires due to high heat residence

Turtles are on the move today in Southern Maryland. I saw two 2 roadkill turtles then helped this third one across the road. Roadkill is hard on turtles, because they’re slow to reach sexual maturity and have low population growth rates. Keep an eye out for them and be safe

It’s been 2 weeks since I girdled this beech tree. I did it to reduce competition against a magnificent white oak. But two weeks later, the leaves are fine, no sign of stress. How can that be? Here’s the deal: the tree’a vascular system has an outer phloem that moves

Planted these panicked tick-trefoil seeds on Wednesday and three days later they’re germinating. It’s a native legume, fixes nitrogen, and the forage and seeds are great for wildlife.

Writing hack: I'm reviewing a lengthy manuscript that is in final revisions. Reading out loud helps a lot, but gets tiresome and I often give up... but I just found a way to make it easier. I'm having my phone read the document to me while I follow along. It's been a huge
