Nearly 300 years ago, the first Black performer to play Juliet was Rachael Baptiste, an Irishwoman also hugely successful as a singer.
She performed in Lancashire in the mid-1700s.

The backlash to Olivia Colman’s self tape comment is interesting. I get that in some ways it levels the playing field but to what end? Getting “in the room” ceases to mean anything when the room is a stadium. Auditioning by self tape feels more & more like entering the lottery.

#ForBlackBoys should run forever and shines such a glaring light on the inaccuracies of what we think a “west end” audience wants. Extraordinary, important theatre.
