Last week’s heavy fighting in DR Congo’s South Kivu province has triggered a major influx of refugees & returnees into Burundi. The EU & partners are providing food, shelter, water, healthcare and other critical assistance.

To support the growing number of refugees from #DRC entering #Burundi, IOM dispatched 73 tonnes of relief items on behalf of EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid 🇪🇺’s #ReliefEU Nairobi stockpile. The 35,000+ items, including tarpaulins & jerrycans, will be distributed by UNHCR Burundi to families in need.

The Head of Office EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid 🇪🇺🇪🇺Great Lakes visited Busuma #refugee site hosting nearly 67,000 people who recently arrived in🇧🇮 fleeing violence.The visit focused on assessing priority needs &the ongoing response including site development and services to meet refugees' basic needs.

Over half a million people have been displaced by violence in South Kivu, DRC. The EU is stepping up support: 🔹 €2M in humanitarian aid to help affected people with food, water, shelter and protection 🔹 73+ tonnes of lifesaving supplies shipped to Burundi to support refugees.

The EU Special Representative for the Great Lakes Johan Borgstam together with the Elisabetta Pietrobon and #UNHCR Representative visited the Busuma #refugee site to assess the emergency situation following the influx of refugees from the DRC into #Burundi.

Seven EU Relief trucks carrying 73+ tonnes of lifesaving aid from Nairobi have arrived in Burundi. The supplies—shelter materials, blankets, mosquito nets and water purification tablets—will support newly arrived refugees fleeing heavy fighting in eastern DR Congo.
