"So the Condemned Man began to speak of another world. This world that the Condemned Man created was ours. At the end of the day's proceedings, the Magistrate was not wholly convinced of the Condemned Man's reasoning, but also unable to wholly dismiss it. So, he adjourned, and

A difficulty I've faced after the death of my friend this year is the narrative that suicide is the "easy way out," for people. It's not. I promise it's not, and I promise life is and can be easier than the hell my friend went through. I really promise you that can be true.

Favorite part of the day is hearing the tram say we've arrived at its stop, "Ibn Khaldun." Imagine being in the United States and stopping at "Aristotle" or "Aquinas".

Week 9 lecture: Jeremiah's Lamentations, collapse, Ibn Khaldun's asabiyyah, diminishing marginal returns and concave responses, epilepsy, critical transitions and flickering, the Siberian tundra, migraine auras, Pixar Studios, antifragility, Nassim Nicholas Taleb on dignity.

Remembering the time my friends were arguing so when one logged out of Minecraft the other friend put lavarock all around his spawn so he'd be trapped then killed all of his dogs and farm animals. I genuinely think it's the dirtiest thing I've ever seen.

"Organizing files isn't work. Sitting at your desk thinking about how much work you have to do isn't work. If you feel this is work, go and have a beer, go play tennis. That's more work than sitting in your office miserable all day thinking about work." - Advice from years ago

Went into a French-Arabic bookstore for the first time and after looking at only three shelves I felt deeply ashamed by the notion of what passes for an equivalent in the United States.

American bookstores are so large and dense and yet they offer nothing to read. I think in the States, it's presumed the person who visits a bookstore is a mindless consumer who will pick up their high-variance texts depending on how hard they push. Here, they just sell books.

Gabe Newell talks about this in his Valve lectures. He saw the gaming market trending towards this, which drove his decision to open up Steam rather than curating games. It's a broader issue with consumer media, and I think with social media algorithms, algorithmic boosting.
