Nice Green Hairstreak at RSPB Minsmere 🌍 today, as well as great sightings of Bittern, Marsh Harrier, Med Gulls, Black Redstart (yesterday), Grey Plover, various terns, Scoters on the sea, Dartford Warbler on Dunwich Heath. Heard Nightingales & various warblers but it seems quiet

Well we got some seed covered (by small slabs of damp clay) before the rain. Thanks a million to james chapman for getting me set up and away - 'just get it done' is the right attitude!!! Watch this space for updates on a prize winning low input wheat crop / slug food

This is the issue: farmers only receive some 5% of the value of the food chain, but shoulder almost all the (escalating) risk & frequently lose money whilst other players increase their margins & make billions in profit.

It’s unsustainable.

Woodcocks mate whilst migrating. A very rare behaviour and would be fascinating study species for mate choice studies!

What's the likelihood that there will be a derogation allowing AB15 legume fallow to be cut for forage or grazed this year? If this cold, wet weather continues and then it dries up through summer, forage availability will be very low. Janet Hughes FWAG East

So the hope of the forecasted dry week has gone, we won't be drilling today and probably not tomorrow either now!

Finally a lovely spring day to get on with some field work. Until the PTO shaft on the fert spreader broke with a full hopper ready to go

I was just wondering what is the most 'efficiently' framed grassland herbivore that is farmed / hunted for meat - Blesbok has to be up there for liveweight:deadweight ratio? Maybe even Muntjac? No data to hand.... British Deer Society (BDS)

Shifting baseline - replicate this amount of development across lowland England. Left is Daventry in 2022, right is Daventry in 1945. We farm just to the north of this. I find the 'rewilding' debate irrelevant to lowland England.

Yesterday the forecast was dry until Tuesday evening, now we have 39 mm forecast for the next week. Just as crops are starting to look average, looks like another tricky time, too wet to travel for fert, sprays etc. No drilling for a long while. Nice day for hedge work at least
