This week the States Assembly - Jersey's elected parliament are asked to approve the enactment of the Convention Rights Law, introducing a legal obligation for politicians and others to actively consider children’s rights. Our members prepared a statement in support of this coming into effect in January.
Thanks and congratulations to Deputy Louise Doublet who started work on Children Rights Law in 2017 with her Backbencher proposition and presented the Commencement Act today.
In 2017, I lodged a proposition requiring States members to consider how our decisions affect children and young people. Today, the States Assembly - Jersey's elected parliament agreed to make this a legal requirement from 1 Jan 2024. Thank you to all those who have supported this work.
