In 2020, nearly 92,000 people fatally overdosed. When I asked Sarah Wakeman why that happened, she blamed "failed policies" and stigma and said, "No one should die from an overdose." pbs.org/newshour/healt…

Currently, I have patients (multiple) needing surgery on dead limbs due to frostbite AND patients (multiple) hospitalized with severe burns from propane-fueled tent fires. Being homeless means you’re damned if you do AND if you don’t. It’s life threatening either way.

This large cohort study of people experiencing homelessness revealed a widening all-cause mortality gap with the general population over 16 years. ja.ma/3YJO9aD

Our study found that encampment clearance/sweeps could increase deaths among people experiencing homelessness by 25% by 2028. "Sweeping" people is not a solution to #homelessness, but is rather a form of (costly) state-sponsored violence.

So excited to share my essay in The Washington Post madebyhistory. Nixon-era, War on Drugs politics are to blame for the stigma and inaccessibility of methadone, one of the most effective medications for opioid addiction. washingtonpost.com/made-by-histor…

Buprenorphine is a lifesaving medication approved for pregnant people w/ opioid use disorder. Patients on this medication are 50% less likely to die of a fatal overdose. But the drug war gives parents w/ 2 options: 1) overdose, or 2) lose your kids. nytimes.com/2023/06/29/mag…

“The choice is between creating centers where people can not die from overdose versus [...] die behind bedroom doors down the hall from their parents, in public restrooms & alleyways.” - Sr. Medical Director for Substance Use Disorders, Sarah Wakeman. We need legislation. ⬇️
