Speed date with a scientist I love organising our "Meet a Researcher" sessions for our first year students. For some of them, its the first time they have ever met a scientist in real life. Spot the famous vision scientist Daisy Shu (she/her/hers) 🤩

With end of year deadlines looming, just a reminder that you can only give what you have. ❌️I should have stayed up all night ✅️I should give the energy I have available to give

The best advice I ever got was to stop always asking for advice. The more you listen to other people, the more you end up doing things that don't make you happy. Sometimes its better to figure it out myself, even if the path is slow and bumpy.

Explaining the academic job market Me: Its like a game of musical chairs...but instead of chairs, it's secure full time positions, and instead of music, it's existential dread.

Ok academia, I have to say this out aloud ...can we stop having advice seminars with only highly successful professors? I'm just need to hear from someone a few steps ahead who actually remembers what it's like to be a struggling mid career researcher.

There is SO much advice on scientific writing. But honestly, only ONE thing consistently improves writing Cut 👏out 👏unnecessary 👏 words 👏 There is a reason why you are penalised for going over the word count, not under it.

One of the hardest things to communicate in science is that it's not only important for research to finding new things but also go back to the same things and look for new ways to do them

My favourite part about academia is where you spend years learning everything about for field of research then the rest of your time evading questions about it at parties with non-academics

Dr Cheung 🥳🥳🥳 Celebrating the graduation of this amazing student who worked so hard over the past 4 years. With 5 papers from her PhD, she thoroughly deserves those two letters before her name. 🤩
