Another insightful, forward-thinking article from The Transmitter. I'll go even further. As someone with experience in both academia and industry, I think that academia's inability to create meaningful careers beyond principal investigator roles is significantly holding it back.

This is fundamental to the Allen Institute. My understanding is that software engineers are generally paid more than scientists and have separate career paths/work on multiple projects. But why stop at soft. engineering? Many tasks are reproduced across separate academic labs.

This is really a stunning paper. Cyanobacteria exposed to shorter days (in the lab) "rewire" their membrane lipids to anticipate cold weather. When those cells are plunged into cold water, they have "two or three-times higher survival" than cells exposed to longer days.
