Had a very moving exchange in Deir Ez-Zor with a group of mainly female returnees from Lebanon. In the coming months, we intend to intensify such discussions in Syria so as to have a better idea of the challenges returnees face but also of their aspirations.

Refugees and internally displaced people are once again preparing to spend #EidAlAdha far from their homes. They dream of celebrating Eid at home with their loved ones. As they face one hardship after another, let’s show solidarity and kindness. #EidMubarak

Syrians, generously hosting refugees for years despite various challenges, continue extending hospitality to refugees including those I met in Deir-ez-Zor in north-east Syria. On #WorldRefugeeDay, we renew our commitment to working towards a world where refugees are welcomed.

Spent yesterday with colleagues speaking with refugee families who have chosen to come back to Syria, in spite of the challenges. This is more humane and, if adequately supported, sustainable than deportations. Forced returns must stop.

Fatima is 75 years old. She was an IDP for ten years and is now safely back home in Wata Al Khan, rural Lattakia. UNHCR helped to repair her home. But, in spite of her smile full of courage, life is a daily struggle because of the very precarious economic situation.

A UNHCR team was present at the Zamarani border today to see the arrival of some 200 Syrians who signed up to return from Lebanon. This is just the start of their journey. Over the coming weeks, we will visit them at their homes to see how we can address their immediate needs.

Today, I attended the Town Hall meeting facilitated by our Protection team with the participation of refugees. These meetings ensure the active engagement of refugees who can discuss protection matters. Understanding and addressing refugee concerns is a top priority for us.

Real pleasure to host an event in Damascus last night to honour the work of the Takatof Shababe Association. Community-based organisations have a vital role to play in Syria and elsewhere. Delighted that Minister of Social Affairs and Labour could attend.

Spent today with colleagues in Raqaa speaking with returnees both in groups and individually. Like Nour–who came back from Lebanon a few months ago with her 4 children and, with help from UNHCR, is now making and selling dresses. With more funding, we can help many more like her.

I was with my colleagues in Dar'a this week visiting a UNHCR-supported community center. Among other activities, we attended an awareness session by our local partner on the serious risks associated with human smuggling.

Amidst the destruction in Dar'a, some refugees are returning from Jordan. We met a number of them this week. In addition to support for the repair of their homes and livelihood opportunities, the priority for them is that their children are able to restart classes at school.
