In 1779, slaves Mammy Kate and Daddy Jack smuggled their master, Stephen Heard, out of a colonial British prison and saved him from execution. He gave them their freedom as thanks. Heard served as Georgia’s governor in 1781. Buried in Stephen Heard Cemetery, Elbert County, Ga.

This is quite an epitaph An amazing act of kindness by the brothers’ friend. I doubt a mining family would not have been able to afford to have all the words inscribed, nor the large stone A very unusual headstone!
