Early afternoon and early evening visitis to Gwent Wildlife Trust Magor Marsh/Cors Magwyr. Chiffchaff, kingfisher, sparrowhawk, little grebe, little egret (roost), gadwall, water rail, stonechat, Cetti’s warbler, swallow and calling robins & wrens. It’s been a good day 🍁🍂 04.10.24

One of the Leaf Beetles, Chrysolina oricalcea, c.8mm long & associated with Cow Parsley - found in our porch after the rains. Photo'd perched on the artist brush used to clean it up before released outside.

Our 1st ever Greater thorn-tipped Longhorn beetle (Pogonocherus hispidulus) in the garden on the 5th on a Bistort leaf. At only c.7mm long it is perfectly disguised as a bird dropping when at rest with its "horns" held back and legs tucked in!

All the Green Shieldbugs (Palomena prasina) we've seen lately are still green and not taking on their brown winter colouration. Not sure if the change is triggered by temperature (no frosts here so far) or light levels? Photo taken on 31.10.24

Both fascinated by them as children & still are - the prehistoric Silverfish (Lepisma saccharinum) which evolved 400 million years ago (pre-dating Dinosaurs by 100m yrs!). They look tough but are so delicate - don't try to pick one up as they turn to dust... Photo'd 17.11.24
