A gorgeous Red Admiral #butterfly sunning itself at #ParcTredelerch last Saturday #WildCardiffHour (known as Glöyn byw, pili pala or iâr fach yr haf in Welsh). Why they're not called a flutterby in English instead of a butterfly is one of life's great mysteries 🦋

Worst year ever for butterflies (no surprise). Yes to finally banning neonicotinoids but a reminder that neonics are widely available in bug sprays from garden centres and supermarkets for home use. "No exceptions" means banning them too Butterfly Conservation 🦋 theguardian.com/environment/20…

I've not got time or daylight enough to sort out my moth trap until this afternoon, work gets in the way of life! But I had this lovely buff ermine caterpillar on the sheet. It's great to see the garden working! S Monmouthshire #mothsmatter #teammoth

The "Northants pioneer" colony of Mottled Shieldbugs (Rhaphigaster nebulosa) are having a good year with 6 seen in the garden yesterday. 4 close together in the usual brash pile including this large, beautifully marked adult and 2 in the Cotoneaster/Beech hedge.

A male Scorpion Fly (Panorpa sp.) in the garden on the 20th. They look fearsome but totally harmless - the "stinger" is used by the male in mating and they mainly scavenge on dead insects. One of Nature's tidier uppers.

Found this particularly well marked Parent Bug (Elasmucha grisea) in the garden last week. It appeared to lay an egg (on a hardy Geranium!) which seems rather unusual as we thought they mated & laid in the spring with adults overwintering? Tristan Bantock Rockwolf 🇪🇺💙🩸🅰️➕ Richard Jones
