As a lover of wetlands, I respectfully request that we stop using metaphors about draining swamps. Swamps are great. Full of frogs and birds and singing insects. They buffer against floods and store carbon. Can we try another metaphor, like cleaning up toxic waste pits?

A quick look at what I’ve been working on for the past several months, as summarized by our bee lab post-doc Dr. Evan Palmer-Young. This work will come together in conjunction with our live bee experiments to make up the first chapter of my dissertation! We’ve been busy 🐝🐝🐝

Great article from the apiarist’s advocate on our new MBIE Science funding to protect #bees using #phages at University of Canterbury. Patrick is spot on here. I am looking forward to this collaboration with co-science lead Peter Fineran and many others (and the summer)! apiaristsadvocate.com/post/millions-…

Stop by my talk tomorrow morning at #EntSoc23 to hear about some beneficial “bugs” and their heated interactions with parasites in bees, and don’t forget to stick around to hear about all of the other cool and unusual insect immune systems featured at the symposium! 🐝🔥🧫

OK, not #beekeeping per se, but these petri-cups work great for screening dozens of medicines and stressors for adult honey bees, led by the cool science of @zaclamas, Lindsey M Markowitz, and Eugene Ryabov. "Bee cups 2.0" researchsquare.com/article/pex-25…

Check out our new genome note preprint that starts to scratch the surface of the dynamic changes in chromosome copy number that Lotmaria passim employs. Now that this one is in the books, stay on the lookout for more to come! Jay Evans
